Salgado Productions is excited to be supporting this new latino writer Carlos Mendoza along with the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre's Playwrights Unit, in the developing stages of Valencia's first staged reading. This first staged reading will be presented at the PRTT as part of the 2013 Playwrights Unit Festival of Readings and Insight Series.

The Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre’s Professional Playwrights Unit, was formed in 1977 under the leadership of Fred Hudson as a play development laboratory.  The purpose of this laboratory is to guide a play from early drafts to an actable script, a “page to stage” workshop.  After rewrites it is given a prepared reading so the play can be seen by theater professionals.  Under the guidance of PRTT Senior Literary Advisor Allen Davis III, selected plays are given prepared readings.

PRTT Founder/Artistic Director:  Miriam Colón-Valle

Playwrights Unit Co-Directors: Mario Golden and  Andreas Robertz

Valencia is the story of a group of senior citizens living in the South Bronx who learn that their senior home is being closed due to economic cutbacks.  To save Valencia, the seniors decide to raise funds by hosting a telethon.  In the process, they show their passion and zest for life.

Rick Reid

I have principally been a stage actor most of career in the art. A huge debt of gratitude in part is due to Marvin Felix Camillo the founder of the repertory company known as La Familia. I was one of its original members and also performed in the original production of 'Short Eyes'. Some other memorable experiences back in the day were in the plays Street Sounds,Twelfth Night, Uncle Vanya, Marriage Proposal, True West, Benpires, La Pared, A Rose in Spanish Harlem, Looking For Tomorrow, Ceremonies In Dark Old Men, Rome Neal's 'Julius Caesar in Africa'to name a few. Of late the Silent Warriors production of 'Pinero Lives On' by Antone Pagan. Independent films of have been 'Once Upon A Time in El Barrio',Purple Paradise, Latin Assassins' by Juan Shamsul Alam and a short 'The Exception by Ramon Pesante'.
A touch of comedy with Beverly Bonner's Comedy Connection and the group Outta Control as a founding member. As a neophyte I had the great good fortune of studying with Miriam Goldina of Stanislavsky Directs and Gilbert Price an excellent actor and voice coach. I had the pleasure of working with Luis Salgado as a director in 'Pinero Lives On' and I thank him for including me in this reading of one the the funniest plays I have ever had the pleasure to read 'Valencia' by Carlos Mendoza. May the joy, humor and wit in this play reach the pinnacle of success in the theatre and be enjoyed by all.
